SPIRIT OF

INNOVATION

Mitchell is the commercial centre of our large 27 793 square kilometre district and its economy predominently relies on primary products such as cattle, sheep, cypress pine milling, and quarry materials with a small amount of broad acre farming on the eastern fringe. The majority of our population is employed within these related industries.

Mitchell is a somewhat small though vibrant rural community with a strong community spirit. It is on of the greatest places to be, where opportunities abound in a beautiful and safe outback environment. For many years our energetic, ambitious community has readily embraced change, viewing it as an opportunity to strenghten and revitalize the community.

Our community strives for diversification of employment opportunities, current primary production practices and the development of value adding activities. It is a primary goal that we manage our natural environment responsibly and support environmentally sound and sustainable economic development. Responsible land management practices and sustainable tourism are key areas of innovation for our district and feature as a high priority on our agenda for development.

We encourage business growth and development throughout the district and actively support the exploration of new initiatives and innovations with enthusiastic optimism. This positive attitude has resulted in attracting new industries to our district, some of which have elected to base their national operations here in Mitchell.

Like many of our counterparts our community recognizes the challenges people, industry and business face in an increasingly competitive and global environment. Through shared visions and a proactive and forward thinking approach our community continues to be positively shaped, responding to the myriad of challenges and opportunities which arise. The outcomes achieved are testimony to the tenacity and commitment of the community to plan for the future.

EDUCATION

Education and skills development are key features of our current economic and community development strategies. One such strategy is the development of an educational program which focuses on life-long learning and incorporates indigenous cultural heritage and knowledge sharing. This project has the strong support of several of Queensland's prestigious Tertiary Institutions.

The Mitchell Queensland State School caters to the needs of the school aged from Prep to Year 10. Within the school grounds, the Mitchell Early Childhood Education Centre is very
busy meeting the town’s childcare needs.

St Patricks School is a Catholic facility catering for children from Prep to Year 6. A daily School Bus service operates to ferry Year 11 and 12 students to the College of the South
West, St John’s and TAFE in nearby Roma.

HEALTH

Mitchell Queensland has a modern hospital with 2 doctors, video linked to specialists in Brisbane and Toowoomba for more difficult cases and in emergencies, aerial evacuation to the most appropriate metropolitan hospital within an hour via Lifeflight or the RFDS.

This wonderful facility has an attached Aged Care Facility and the precinct also contains independent low income housing units provided by the Maranoa Regional Council. Mitchell Medical Practice also operates out of Mitchell Hospital and Dental services are available at the hospital on a weekly basis. The Mitchell Pharmacy, with a fully qualified Pharmacist, provides a full range of pharmaceutical services . The town is regularly visited by Allied Health practitioners (e.g physio, OT, dietician, diabetes educator, speech pathologist, social worker, podiatrist). All these services are well supported by a Community Health Nurse, Blue Care, Anglicare, Meals on Wheels and of course, the Queensland Ambulance Service.

SECURITY

Peace of mind is as important to the quality of the modern day lifestyle as any other single factor. Unfortunately, as our wonderful nations grows, the pressures of overcrowding, congestion, unemployment and simple population pressure are forcing some very unwanted behaviours by a few to the forefront and impacting the lives of so many in the cities and larger towns. Well, Mitchell offers the opportunity to escape from all that. How?

-

COMMUNITY POLICING

Mitchell Queensland has a four man Police Station focused on Community Policing. The crime rate is almost non-existent.
